Né dans le Massachusetts. Il commence à étudier la musique à 4 ans. En 1965, il collabore avec Herbie Mann et Pete LaRoca et enregistre avec Woody Shaw, Joe Farrell, Steve Swallow et Joe Chambers. 1966, il remplace Gary Burton dans l'orchestre de Stan getz. Il enregistre son premier album sous son nom "Tone for Joan's Bones". Il quitte l'orchestre de Stan Getz et est engagé par Miles Davis. Il se met au piano électrique. En 1970 il crée le trio Circle [Dave Holland, Barry Altschul] qui devient quartette avec Anthony Braxton. En 1972, il forme le groupe "Return To Forever" [Joe Farrell, Stanley Clarke, Airto Moreina, Flora Purim] et enregistre deux albums. Le groupe est dissout, puis reformé avec Clarke, Bill Connors, Lenny White, Mingo Lewis, puis Al DiMeola. Il poursuit une carrière internationale à la tête de diverses formations.
