| SAXOPHONES | The soprano, alto, tenor and baryton saxophones are used in jazz. This instrument was invented in 1840 by Adolphe Sax, and first used in military fanfares. It appears in jazz at the end of 1914. At the end of the first world war, with the return of the american soldiers to the states, it becomes a very popular instrument. Sidney Bechet is the first to improvise with a saxophone. Many saxophone players also play the clarinet.
